Horse Camp to Helen Lake

Return to Mount Shasta home page

Horse Camp, at about 8000', got its name from the simple fact that early climbers would leave their horses there as they continued up the mountain. The Sierra Club Foundation caretaker's cabin, built in the 1920s, is a popular meeting place all year long, but camping inside the cabin should be reserved for emergencies only. Just behind the cabin is the Olberman's Causeway. Built from large, flat stones, it will lead you up in the right direction toward Helen Lake at 10,400 feet.
