Getting to Horse Camp

Return to Mount Shasta home page

After getting whatever supplies and gear you need in town, you start on the 11 plus mile drive up the Everitt Memorial Highway to the Bunny Flat parking area at about 7000'. If you did not fill out a Wilderness permit in Mount Shasta, you will have to fill one out here. From Bunny Flat to the Sierra Club Foundation caretaker's cabin at Horse Camp is only about 1.7 miles, and the elevation gain is just about 1000'. The walking is fairly easy, the view beautiful, and be sure to take note of the broken trees from previous snow avalanches.

Fifth Season Guides do an equipment check with climbers. Everything from axes to water bottles are checked over.
Climbing Gear A climber's pack and gear await a guide's perusal. Anything missing will be added, and many unneeded items will be left behind.
Bunny Flat Bunny Flat parking area at 6860 feet. Vehicles are left here, permits filled out, and last chance for a comfortable bathroom break.
Bunny Flat Trailhead Bunny Flat Trailhead. The well-marked trail meanders off from the parking area toward Horse Camp.
Muir Route About a half mile up the trail to Horse Camp. Lower Avalanche Gulch. Good view of the Muir Route.
