Frequently Asked Questions

- How can I get a voice mail account?
- Any regular staff member or full- or part-time faculty member may
have a voice mail account. If this is not set up for you at the time you are hired, please contact the Human Resources area to request this for you.
-
- I've forgotten my password. What should I do?
- If you have forgotten your voice mail password, send a Help Desk request, http://www.siskiyous.edu/cgi-bin/start.exe/apps/helpdesk/login1.htm, or call Tech Services at x5222 to have it reset to the campus default password. You
can then change it to a password of your choice. If you've forgotten
your long distance pass code or need to establish one, follow the same procedure.
-
- How do I make a long distance phone call?
- Dial 9, the phone
number (7-digits if within the 530 area code or 1 + area code
+ 7 digits if out of the area), and your 5-digit
personal pass code. Hint: When you dial any long
distance number, the system will "prompt" you to enter your
pass code with a series of short beeps. This doesn't mean anything
is wrong. Just go ahead and enter your code.
-
- Occasionally, a new area code will be added that our phone system
does not yet recognize. If this happens, you'll get a "wave-off"
sound (the "French Ambulance") when you try to dial the number.
Call Tech Services for help.
-
- Can I make international calls?
- Because of cost and security concerns, international calls need to
go through the campus operator. If you have the need to make such
a call, dial 0 to call the campus operator.
-
- How do I transfer a call?
- 1. Press Transfer (Current call is put
on hold).
- 2. Dial the extension to which the call
is being transferred.
- 3. (Optional) Remain on the line and announce the call.
- 4. Press Transfer again (Call is
sent to the dialed extension or number).
- 5. Hang up.
-
- How do I transfer a caller directly to someone's voice mailbox?
- This is useful when you'd like to give the caller the option of leaving
a voice mail, but don't want to interrupt the person being called.
Here's how to do it:
- - Let the caller know you will be transferring them to a voice mailbox.
- - Press Transfer.
- - Press 5999 (to access voice mail).
- - Wait for voice mail to answer (this needs to be done for the transfer
to work).
- - Press **.
- - Enter mailbox number (4-digit extension).
- - Press Transfer.
- (The procedure is a bit different if you are transferring from a telephone
that doesn't have a voice mailbox. In this case, enter only one
*, enter the mailbox
number and press Transfer.)
-
- I want to erase old voice mail messages without having to listen
to each entire message.
- You can skip to the end of the message immediately and erase by pressing
337 at any time during the message.
-
- How do I pick up a second call when I'm on the phone?
- Single-line phone

-
- My phone rings one quick ring, but no one is there. What is wrong?
- You may have Call Forwarding or Send All Calls activated. Pick
up the handset and press #2 to deactivate Call Forwarding. You
will hear a confirmation tone of 3 short beeps. Repeat with #3
to deactivate Send All Calls. Have someone dial your extension
from a nearby phone to see that calls are ringing through OK.
If this doesn't fix the problem, give Tech Services a call.
-
- I'm calling in to the College long distance and don't want to keep
redialing different extensions. Is there a way I can transfer
myself to other numbers?
- If the person you are calling doesn't answer and you get his/her voice
mail, press *. This will take you
to the "Welcome to College of the Siskiyous..." recording.
Enter the next extension you wish to call.
Similarly, if you are listening to your voice mail and want to call
someone without hanging up, press 5 (restart).
You will get the "Welcome to College of the Siskiyous..."
recording and may then enter an extension. These can be very useful
for saving time and toll charges.
-
- It seems like a long process just to get into voice mail. Is there
any way to speed it up?
- There are a couple of things you can do. When entering your
password, follow it by a #
to go faster to your voice mail - it shaves off a little time.
The announcement can also be shortened (e.g., instead of saying "You
have one new message," it will say "One new message").
Change this by going into your voice mail and, at the main menu, pressing
4233 (this can be found on the multi-colored
voice mail flow chart if you want to see the path). You should
hear the message, "You have selected rapid prompts."
-
- When I need to leave a message for someone on campus, can I skip
listening to their whole announcement?
- Sure. When the announcement starts, press #
which will take you directly to the "beep" that allows you
to leave a message. This will not work if an Extended Absence
Greeting has been recorded.
-
- How do I change the volume?
- The volume can be adjusted by pressing on the right end of the control
button (the long toggle button right under the dialing keypad) for louder
and the left end for softer. You can independently set volume for
incoming rings (adjust while phone is ringing) and handset loudness
(adjust while on the phone).
-
- It's difficult to tell whose phone in the office is ringing.
How can I change the ring on my phone?
- Without picking up the handset, press the Conf
(Ring) button on the phone.
You will hear the ring that is currently set. To change, press
the Ring button again. Each time you press the ring button, you
will hear a different ring, eight in all. When you have found
one you like, let the phone ring with that ring, about three times.
You will then hear a two-tone short beep to let you know the ring is
set.
-
- The phones in our office aren't set up the way we'd like.
What can I do?
- Send a request to the Tech Services Help Desk. The form is online at http://www.siskiyous.edu/cgi-bin/start.exe/apps/helpdesk/login1.htm.
-
- Is there any written documentation for the phone system?
- The best
source of documentation is this set of web pages. If your
question is not answered on this page, see the other phone documentation
web pages for general information, voice
mail, single-line phone, and multi-line
phone. If there is a phone function that is not addressed on these
pages, call Nancy Shepard at x5881 to have it added to the web site.
