Submissions Sought for COS Eco-Fashion Show!

COS Drama and Fashion Clubs are hosting an Eco-Fashion Show Saturday, February 27th at 8:00 PM in the Ford Theater and they are looking for submissions from designers in the county who make clothing using recycled materials or clothing.  This show serves many purposes: to give people ideas on how to embellish or remake existing clothes to have fun and save money; to promote the reuse of materials to help preserve our environment; and to raise money for local food banks.  Anyone is welcome to enter, whether you are already selling your unique designs or you are just looking to have some fun modeling them. Sixty entries will be selected for the show based on their creative use of reused items. If submitting recycled garments for consideration, a before picture is encouraged but not required. There is no entry fee and the limit is three entries per person. One outfit constitutes one entry.  Submissions should be e-mailed to the show’s advisor/coordinator at swingle@siskiyous.edu by February 10th.  E-mails should include the name of the entrant, a phone number, a picture of each submission, and a short explanation of how recycled items were used in its creation.  If your item is chosen for the show, you will be asked to provide a model who is willing to meet extensively the day of the show for training and rehearsal. You are welcome to model your own clothes and some student models are available. Designers may also offer their entries for sale if interested. There will be student handcrafted clothing items and jewelry for sale by fashion club students in the lobby before and after the show.  Ticket sales, program advertising sales and 10% of all clothing and accessory sales from the event benefit the Siskiyou Food Assistance program. Local food bank needs have sky-rocketed because of the bleak job market, making this the highest-demand period in their history.  This show will be a fun event for all involved and benefits this needy cause. Tickets will be available only at the door the day of the event for $5. A $1 discount will be taken for each canned good brought to the event. For more information contact Sharon Swingle, in the COS Theatre Department at 530-842-6115. (Download a pdf copy of the poster here.)

A Trend in Eco-Fashion

What is eco-fashion you may ask? It is really a generic term that can mean a lot of different things. While this fashion show is focusing on "reuse" from the "reduce, recycle, reuse" strategy to improve our planet, there are other considerations to help create a healthier and more humane world. Some of these can be: chosing vegetarian/ and animal free, ethically produced, artisan products, custom or "slow fashion", fair trade certified, organic, or vintage products. If you would like to find out more about these concepts, please visit Eco Fashion World's e-zine here http://www.ecofashionworld.com/Browse-By-Eco-Criteria.html As a consumer, you can change the world by chosing carefully the products you buy. Remember, each purchase can be a vote for a better planet.
