Upward Bound

Our Mission:

"To work with first generation students to provide the motivational support and the educational and practical skills necessary to graduate to higher education and SUCCEED!"

Upward Bound serves students who have the potential to become the first generation in their families to complete a college education.

Upward Bound also assists students of low-income families, and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter post-secondary education.

If your family meets the low-income criteria established by the U.S. government, OR if neither parent has completed a 4-year college degree, you may have already met the basic qualifications.

Two-thirds of COS Upward Bound students are both low-income AND "first generation"; the rest are either one or the other. This is a ratio mandated by federal law. There are currently approximately 65 students in the program.

Upward Bound programs are entirely federally funded, and are 100% free of cost to students who participate.

The Upward Bound program provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits.

The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. All Upward Bound projects must provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature and foreign language.

The Upward Bound Program at the College of the Siskiyous, serving high school students year-round throughout Siskiyou county, is one of 8 federally funded TRIO programs initiated in 1965 to promote equal opportunity in education. To facilitate relationships with local high schools, the COS Upward Bound program is coordinated with Siskiyou County's Office of Education.

Upward Bound has chapters everywhere, in counties all over the country. There are even chapters in foreign countries, and independent chapters in the U.S., including one within the Japanese community in San Francisco, and some on Native American reservations, as in Oklahoma.

Nation-wide, Upward Bound has helped thousands of students succeed in graduating from college and universities since 1966.
