Writing Lab Services

 The Writing Lab can help with the following:

• Drop-in help: We can look over your rough draft and offer suggestions for improving your writing. We will point out your weak areas, explain corrections, and help you become your own editor.
• Getting started on a writing task:  See us if you don't know how to start.
• Citing sources:  We can show you the correct format for all standard citations.
• Finding a topic:  Let us help you select a topic that fits the assignment.
• Writer's block:  Stuck? We can help you get going again.
• Thesis statement:  We'll show you how to write a limited and clear thesis.
• Term papers:  We can lead you through the process with our step-by-step Research Paper Survival Guide.
• Avoiding Plagiarism: We can show you how to quote, paraphrase, and cite your sources to avoid plagiarism problems.
• Workshops and Seminars: Various topics will be offered throughout the semester; dates and times to be announced.
• Writing Assistance for Online Students: Students in an online course may submit papers to the Writing Lab for review, but they must adhere to the following guidelines.
  • E-mail papers to writelab@siskiyous.edu
  • No attachments accepted. Explain the assignment requirements then copy and paste your paper directly into the body of the e-mail.
  • A response will usually follow in one to two days.  Please include a street address if there is any difficulty with your email access, and we will respond via U.S. Postal Service.

We have:

• Dictionaries and thesauruses for your use
• Textbooks to use as topic resources
• Writing handbooks
• Helpful handouts on many writing concerns
• Copies of successful papers from a number of COS courses
• Open work space
• And most of all, a friendly, experienced staff!
