Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

Get College Credit For What You Already Know

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom.

CPL may be earned in two different ways:

Documentation: This option only allows the student to receive passing credit for the class and will result in a 'Pass' grade on the student's transcript.

  • Evaluation of Industry Recognized Training
  • Other standardized examinations or documentation include achievement of a satisfactory score on an Advanced Placement (AP) examination, achievement of a satisfactory score on a higher-level International Baccalaureate (IB) examination, achievement of a satisfactory score on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and evaluation of Joint Services Transcripts (JST). However, credit for these standardized examinations or documentation will be reflected on transcripts once it is processed by a transcript evaluator (i.e., in other words, this process is automatic; no separate application needs to be submitted).

Assessment: With this option, the student may opt for either a letter grade or pass/fail. Types assessments include:

  • Credit by Exam: Satisfactory completion of an institutional examination. Credit by Examination may require the demonstration of other skills or the completion of assignments in addition to the examination.
  • Evaluation of Student-Created Portfolios

Additional details may be found in Administrative Procedure 4235.
