Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We here in the Financial Aid Office know that this process can be confusing. Below are some frequently asked questions for you to review before calling that may be able to help you. If you need clarification or if your question was not answered by these FAQs, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at (530) 938-5209 or send us an email at financialaid@siskiyous.edu so that we may assist you.

The first step for receiving almost all Financial Aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is available online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa or a paper form is available in the Financial Aid office.

*Please note that it takes 3-5 business days for us to receive your FAFSA once you have completed the process and added our school.*

  • If you are a current Spring 2023 student, please complete the 22-23 FAFSA
  • If you are planning on attending COS for the upcoming Summer 2023 term, please complete the 22-23 FAFSA
  • If you are planning on attending COS for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, please complete the 23-24 FAFSA

You will need

  • Your basic personal information (contact information, social security number, etc.)
  • Your tax information from two years prior (2022-2023 FAFSA asks for your 2020 tax information and 2023-2024 asks for your 2021 tax information)
  • The names or school codes for the schools you would like to receive your FAFSA information (The school code for COS is 001187)
*If you do not list us on your FAFSA, we will not receive your information and therefore cannot process any financial aid for you*

If you are classified as a dependent student, you will also need your parent's personal and tax information.

You are considered a dependent student unless you are:

  • Age 24 or older
  • Currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • A veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • A graduate or professional student
  • Married at the time of completing the FAFSA
  • An orphan or ward of the court
  • Have children for whom you provide more than half their support
  • Determined by a court in your state of legal residence to be an emancipated minor
  • Determined by your high school or school district homeless liaison any time on or after July 1, 2020 that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or at risk of being homeless

If you are not in one of these categories above, parent income information is required. Parents unwilling to provide information are not a consideration.

No. Once we receive your FAFSA information (3-5 business days after you complete it) there are additional steps you must take to complete your file and be eligible for financial aid. You can see what steps you need to complete on your mySiskiyous. Once you log in, select the Billing and Financial Aid tab. There should be an information box on the right hand side of the screen labeled Financial Aid Requirements. Within this box, you are able to view the tasks you must complete to be eligible for financial aid. Many of these you can complete online.

After you complete the FAFSA and complete your file with financial aid, complete and submit the Federal Direct Student Loan Request for College of the Siskiyous. This can be found on our website (http://www.siskiyous.edu/financialaid/studentloans.htm) or in our office. You can submit the completed and signed loan request over email or in person.

You must complete the entrance counseling, master promissory note. These are listed on the application and can be found at https://studentaid.gov Your loan will not be processed unless these are complete.

*Students are no longer able to access their Financial Aid Review from NSLDS. Instead, log into StudentAid.gov and print off the two circular graphs showing your total loan and grant usage*

You can find your aid review at https://studentaid.gov/. Take a look at this document for step by step instructions.
